Regarding Regards
One of my pet language peeves is the misuse of the phrase "with regard to". A lot of people in our school, including language teachers, use the phrase "with regards to" indiscriminately. My problem is I always get ticked off every time I hear that phrase uttered.
A couple of days ago, I couldn't help myself and gathered several of my students and told them to avoid using "with regards to". I compared the misused word "regards", which means greetings, to the proper word "regard", which means attention, and the kids immediately picked up the difference.
I'm not really a grammar nazi, and I probably let slip several wrongly worded phrases myself, but it's just that this particular phrase is widely bandied around by people in our school, that I couldn't resist pointing attention to it.
